Native to Newfoundland, this breed was first brought to Great Britain in 1800 by English ships coming from Labrador. Weighing 55-75 pounds (24-36kg), it is a short solid dog growing to approximately 22 inches (55-57 cm) high. With an intelligent expression, robust head and powerful neck the labrador is also equipped with an excellent sense of smell. The hair is dense and hard, without waves and with a water-resistant undercoat. There are three colour forms: black, liver and yellow.

The labrador is lively, affectionate, lovable and works well retreiving for its master. Working in marshes and water it is also used to help fishermen draw in their nets.

After completing a series of labrador paintings, drawings and pastel portrait commissions for a labrador breeder and enthusiast, I decided to portray this labrador for myself. Handsome and good natured, the dog was a pleasure to work with.

From the sale of my 'Black Labrador' drawing and with the sale of each 'Labrador Retriever' and 'Black Labrador' Greetings Card and Fine Art Print a donation is given to the Labrador Lifeline Trust.
