From childhood I have always enjoyed drawing using pencils and for this subject a pencil portrait seemed to be most appropriate. Horses are magnificent creatures and Bug, a warmblood horse, was an absolute pleasure to portray.
Warmbloods are a group of sport horse breeds and the term simply distinguishes this type of horse from the coldbloods and hotbloods. Coldbloods are generally known as heavy or draft horses such as Shire and Suffolk Punch and hot bloods as Thoroughbreds and Arabians.
Most warmblood breeds are continuing to evolve and are not 'breeds' in the sense that Arabians, Morgans and Lipizzan are breeds. Warmbloods are named after the countries and regions from which they were bred e.g Hanoverian, Selle Francais, Dutch,Danish and Swedish Warmbloods.
In the twentieth century, European breeders began refining their horses to produce a sound, large framed, athletic horse with superior movement and a good temperament. Although warmbloods are capable of being all-round horses, they excel in dressage, eventing and show jumping.
Through my artwork I hope to help the work of The Brooke Hospital for Animals which has been working since 1934 to help relieve the suffering of horses, donkeys and mules working for poor people in the developing world. Their aim is to reach millions of working equine animals suffering pain and distress wherever the need is greatest. Dedicated local vets and their teams provide free care, education and training in the heart of the communities in Egypt, India, Pakistan and Jordan.
From the sale of my pencil drawing of a black horse, title ' Kindersong', and with the sale of each 'Kindersong' black horse Fine Art Print and Greetings Card, a donation is given to The Brooke charity.
