The Cape Mountain Zebra is the smallest of the three remaining zebra species. Zebra are intriguing mammals and I have always been fascinated by the contrast in colour, and their stripey design. My handsome zebra artwork is a pastel painting on a black background. A dark background requires a different approach and this linear design was an interesting challenge. The original painting is not available but Cape Mountain Zebra prints are available from my Nature In Fine Art shop.

The Cape Mountain Zebra is endemic to South Africa and is a subspecies of the Mountain Zebra (Equus zebra). Once abundant throughout the Eastern and Western Cape, the Cape Mountain Zebra declined drastically due to hunting and loss of habitat. The species faced extinction as numbers declined drastically to less than 60 individuals at the beginning of the 20th century, but thanks to conservation efforts, an estimated 5,000 zebra now live in South Africa.  Even though numbers have risen, it is still  IUCN listed as Vulnerable.   As its name applies, the Cape Mountain Zebra can be found on the slopes and plateaus of mountainous regions where it is a highly selective feeder, feeding only on green, leafy plants.
